San Ysidro Ranch Montecito
Set on 500 acres, San Ysidro Ranch is located at the foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountain Range overlooking the Pacific. Six miles from Santa Barbara, It’s part of this exclusive enclave of Montecito, a sanctuary for celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Rob Lowe and Tom Cruise.
Style & personality
Personal cottages wind across the Ranch’s hillside creek and coastal trails. Each cottage is individually decorated: the total appearance is upscale country-chic. The gardens would be the ranch hallmark, signalled from the lavender-planted driveway leading to your property. Between the cottages are fig trees laden with fresh ripe fruit, tomato blossoms, orange trees and plant gardens. Each cabin and space has its spacious outside area, catering to a clientele who appreciates privacy above all else.
Service & amenities
Service is first rate. Unlike many resorts, where you could expect to wait some time for any petition to be fulfilled, things materialise whenever you place the phone down. There are extras you never knew existed, for example led San Ysidro Ranch notepaper with your name published followed by “…at Residence/Geranium [the title of one of those cottages]”.
The resort has a spa and scenic pool under an orchard of lemon trees. There’s also an extensive library including books by a few of their famous guests like John Galsworthy, Somerset Maugham and Sinclair Lewis. Front desk employees are educated about the region and have maps for local elevators, which leads straight off the house and upward into the hills.
Constructed in classic bungalow style, all rooms have fireplaces, and several have decks with sweeping views and outdoor spa. Bedrooms have four-poster canopy beds with Rivolta Italian linen bedding and goose-down duvets. The bathrooms are big with bath tubs and separate showers – both indoor and outside. Toiletries are by Bulgari, and Persian carpets cover the floors. The cottages are intended for lingering; many have separate sitting rooms and have outside sun loungers and comfy sofas. All technician comforts and Nespresso machines.
Food & beverage
2 restaurants, beloved of actors and with great reason. The food is exceptional from the amorous Plow and Angel, in which lights have been strung throughout the branches of trees in the outside patio. Especially great is your grilled hearts of cos lettuce with radicchio, gruyère cheese crouton and anchovies ($16/p12) along with the gently smoked king salmon ($39/p30). It seemed like Ellen DeGeneres about the next-door dining table was getting the exact same. Upstairs is the appropriate Stonehouse restaurant, in which the food is every bit as great, but more expensive.
The in-cottage breakfast menu consists of exceptional eggs Florentine with basil hollandaise and ranch potatoes ($18/#14).
