Benguerra Island is the second biggest in the Bazaruto Archipelago, only reachable by boat or a 15-minute helicopter ride from Vilanculos. Place in a marine national park, in which turtles, manta rays, dolphins and Dugong play, it is a diver’s paradise.

Style & personality

The lodge and condos have been constructed in traditional style, with natural, local materials, with thatched jekka roofs to blend in with the scenery. Inside, the look is luxurious beachside chic — plenty of stained wood, mosaics, crisp white linen and vibrant fabrics, a lot of which was made or sourced on the island or at Vilanculos. The perspectives from reception on arrival are jaw-dropping.

Service & amenities

Each villa comes with its own Mozambican ‘server’, who appears after you for the length of your stay. When I said that I practice yoga, a pad and cubes were awaiting my deck the next morning. I had a blissful marula oil massage by therapist Linda. The lodge runs environmental and social projects via its registered charity, the Rainbow Fund, which assembled the regional main school and teachers’ housing. Native islander, Carlos, takes guests outside snorkelling, in addition to on an island excursion, showing you that the college, sand dunes and lakes.

A media room, beside the couch, has tv and online access. There is also a little boutique nearby reception, in which souvenirs and essentials could be purchased. The African Spa offers treatments using natural ingredients like coconut, tamarind and aloe vera. In-room remedies can be reserved at no additional charge.

The 20 standalone villas on the shore, surrounded by native trees and plant, and joined by a community of crushed-shell paths. Enormous, sea-facing doors permit for a breeze, even although there’s air-conditioning if you require it. Beds are very comfortable; baths are spacious, with exterior dual ovens for post-beach cooldowns. Each villa has its own pool and garden, in addition to a sun deck and daybed mere footsteps from the coast. Yes, although guest privacy is requested to be admired. Kids have loads of activities to keep them busy, and the chefs can prepare foods acceptable for youthful palettes. Young children are asked to dine at the villas. Villa Amizade along with the Presidential Villa would be those to reserve.
