Style & personality
The inn — that dates back into 1489 — is as composed as a temple, using a cotton noren curtain indicating its entry. Under a tiled tiled roof, guests are greeted with bowing kimono-clad employees before sneakers are swapped for slippers in a tasteful monochrome pebble genkan entry. The inn might be traditional ryokan design — all tatami mat flooring and banquets served at the area. Yet despite its own rich legacy there’s a timelessly new and contemporary setting — as reflected in splashes of contemporary design, for instance, white gemstone Harry Bertoia chairs in the lounge, overlooking the lake.

True to its standing as a ryokan, the ceremony is perfect; employees strike a fantastic balance between being friendly and intuitively useful without being intrusive (despite being somewhat heavy on the bowing front). Soaking in curative hot spring onsen waters is the major raison d’etre of this inn — with the two personal in-room and subtropical bathing areas fringing the lake, all with magnificent views fringed with bamboo woods and seasonal foliage.
All the 17 rooms are all timeless ryokan design of the maximum grade: nominal tatami mat flooring spaces with sliding paper screens, futons unrolled every day with team, tasteful asymmetrical flower arrangements, calligraphic scrolls and — at 11 chambers — profound wooden baths. All have large windows framing haiku-inspiringly ideal views throughout the lake, complete with a wooden floating noh point where periodic concerts happen.

In classic ryokan fashion, guests slide into cotton kimono-style yukata prior to being served as a timeless kaiseki banquet fit for royalty from the solitude of their own space. The supper — eaten while kneeling in a minimal table — includes about a dozen exquisitely pretty dishes created kind local, seasonal desserts, from sashimi and eel hot baskets to pile veggies, served on a medley of fine ceramics adorned with leaves and blossoms. Breakfast, also served at the area, can be conventional Japanese (local fish and rice) or Western fashion (eggs, bread, fruit).
