Hotel Santa Caterina Amalfi , Italy

Hotel Santa Caterina Amalfi, Amalfi Coast, Italy (

Hotel Santa Caterina

Run by the fourth generation of their family that opened it as a resort in 1904, it is the type of comfy yet sophisticated location that you long to return to (repeat reservations amount to almost 40 percent).

Location

Only outside Amalfi, the resort is usefully set for visits to Ravello (30 minutes by bus), Positano and Capri (both 40 minutes from ferry). Although the front of this tasteful, 19th-century mansion is roadside, all is calm indoors along with the resort’s citrus groves, pergola walks, terraces and gardens fall into the sea beneath.

Style & personality

It has been in precisely the exact same family since 1904. Family antiques pepper the trendy, white insides, which can be splashed with Mediterranean color on patterned tiles and cloths. The airy dining area has a gorgeous blue Brazilian-marble floor along with a beautiful terrace overlooking sea and gardens. The major surprise is that the glass elevator which whooshes down the valley where the beautiful pool, pub, beach-shack restaurant (dance to live music on Tuesdays), sea and ships wait.

Service & amenities

As in a lot of family-run Italian hotels, the ceremony is unique, delivered by dedicated long-standing community employees. A kiss on the hand in the doorman; a spot-on joke in the head waiter; titles recalled by all: professionalism and warmth combined. In addition to the Beach Club, there’s a little but hard-working spa plus a boutique.

Rooms

You will find amorous standalone folly-suites embedded into the gardens, also 55 rooms at the home. They’re airy and white, and several are sea-facing with stunning terraces. All have beautiful tiled baths.

Food & beverage

The traditional Italian menu hits the place and perfectly matches the atmosphere, along with the humor of the waiters, lots of whom have worked there for decades, create both breakfast and dinner on the patio overlooking the sea a unforgettable pleasure.
