Ahilya Fort Khargone Madhya Pradesh
A two-hour driveway south west of Indore (regular flights in Delhi and Mumbai), the resort sits atop the huge sandstone walls of Maheshwar Fort. From the patio you’ll be able to look back on Indian life performed to the banks of the sacred Narmada River, a tiny Varanasi in which pilgrims have come to immerse themselves and plead to the Hindu god Shiva.
Style & personality
Rooms are sprinkled among the 18th-century, half-timbered buildings placed around shady courtyards. Sitting areas include carefully curated household heirlooms and artefacts and are patrolled from the proprietor’s beloved pugs. Service & amenities
The longstanding staff are a joy to interact with and make each guest feel cossetted. They organise free boat rides on the lake and excursions of their Rehwa Society’s fabric workshop and faculty. At sunset, a fully stocked cocktail bar looks on the patio (beverages are free). There is also a tailoring studio, a more conventional masseur, a well-stocked library and bikes to explore the countryside.
There are 13 rooms and suites (one in a tent around the ramparts with its own plunge pool and lake perspective) all spacious and beautifully furnished with well-chosen classic and artisanal pieces. Beds are extremely comfortable with top notch linen. The spacious bathrooms have strong walk-in rainshowers and home made soaps. All rooms have been air-conditioned and also have fridges and coffee and tea makers. Housekeeping is topnotch.
Food & beverage
Globetrotting Holkar is a trusted chef also runs a great kitchen nothing elaborate, only yummy, freshly prepared dishes. Lunches are usually European using cold salads, soups, grilled vegetables and pasta. Dinners are candlelit; the place moving every night to some other magical place from the gardens. Guests are invited to dine with other people at tables for six, however you may opt to consume independently. House specialities include Kashmiri Dogra court duck in pomegranate, beef with green chilli, and aubergine in a tamarind yoghurt. Unlimited cocktails, beer and wine (Indian manufacturers) are included in the room price.
Breakfast breads and pastries are exceptional (all baked on website) along with also the prince gets the jams himself. Maheshwari scrambled eggs and conventional poha (rice gently fried with fruits and nuts) are highly suggested.
