Limalimo Lodge Simien Mountains
The resort is thrillingly sited on the edge of the escarpment at the Simien Mountains National Park, overlooking an astounding panorama: a fantastical confection of eroded ochre pinnacles — cones, spires, humps, needles — whose shadows change from the shifting light. The lodge can be easily reached by road, and only a couple of kilometers from Debark, city where the headquarters of the National Park is located. It’s also conveniently near the major street to Tigray, where lots of people traveling following the Simien Mountains.
Style & personality
What really sets this lodget aside from the remaining nation are its contemporary looks. In reaction to the magnificent setting, Addis Ababa-based Italian architect Mario Balducci has made a collection of appropriately airy, spacious, uncluttered interior spaces — a massive bar/sitting space, dining area, trendy boutique, courtyard and patio with firepits for extra warmth.
They are simply furnished but comfortable, with dull, natural colors. They feel trendy and chic. At precisely the exact same time, in reaction to this place, the lodge was constructed by local employees with the surroundings very much in your mind. It’s the very first resort in Ethiopia to use the North African rammed-earth system, with all ground collected from the website and creating exquisite walls which blend naturally into the environment.
Service & amenities
The lodge is that the production of Shif, a talented former trekking manual, and Julia, his British wife that was an academic writer. The supervisor, head chef and other essential employees have backgrounds in hospitality; the employees are differently all wear and local elegant, especially made toddlers (embroidered shifts for the women) that they’re extremely pleased with.
Activities organised from the lodge include hiking in the Simien Mountains, while for a day or two more, with overnight camping, seeing Limalimo village, intimate champagne breakfasts in mountainous areas, massages and early morning yoga sessions.
Limalimo is lavish by Ethiopian standards, although not by the criteria of western luxury resorts, but in its own sense of calmness and beauty and its own telescopic, modern design. But it’s very comfortable, with lots of luxurious touches including the handmade Hypnos mattresses which have migrated out of Britain as well as the nice all-natural silk-and-cotton cloths by Sabahar that gown equally beds and the walls of windows in every relaxing bedroom.
These are put in eight different buildings using rammed earth walls, wooden furnishings, big showers, ‘dwelling’ roofs and remote perspectives (the most breathtaking view is earmarked for the paychecks, a brief, if steep walk over them).
Food & beverage
Breakfasts include fresh fruit in addition to yoghurts, cereals and cooked dishes. Packed lunches are ingenious and at dinner that the criteria are high, using a mixture of Ethiopian and European dishes on the menu.
