Bale Mountain Lodge Bale Mountains National Park

It is an attempt to achieve, being 250 miles north of Addis Ababa, however its a travel you shouldn’t neglect to create. The lodge is set in a gorgeous clearing from the Harenna Cloud forest, with a background of hills and a river flowing through. Even though the closest village is just a couple miles off, so distant is the atmosphere which not only is lodging for guests supplied, but for workers, guides and drivers too. It’s a fantastic sense of peace and safety, conduct day to day with benign power by ex-teacher Yvonne Levene along with her husband, Guy. Its presence means the special and diverse wildlife and landscapes of the Bale Mountains are in hand, particularly the rare and enigmatic Ethiopian wolf.

Style & personality

The principal construction, for dishes, beverages and relaxing, with a pinch of windows which take in the view along with a comfy sunken fireplace, is round and thatched, with stone-built ‘menyetta-bets’ (bedrooms) leading it off. Furnishings are simple, in keeping with the environment, homely and comfortable and there’s a pub at which you could be served a fantastic gin & tonic. Eyes stray always into the perspective; the mountain in the background gives a sheltering sense to the lodge and there’s a good sense of peace, with much to see regarding wildlife and birds, while relaxing in the backyard.

Service & amenities

The lodge has lodging for guests’ drivers/guides. There’s Wi-Fi, although not necessarily dependable, and hot water bottles are supplied for cold nights, in addition to log burners from the rooms. Staff are largely neighborhood and such as the educated in-house manuals (great English), they’re charming, considerate and attentive, if bashful, using little English.

Pick between rock constructed rooms near the principal building, or wooden constructions secreted from the tree-filled grounds. One is a romantic treehouse. Each area has a wood-burning range and vibrant cries on the beds, with matching drapes, wooden furnishings and easy shower rooms.

Food & beverage

Anticipate home cooking, easy but healthy, with English, Italian and Ethiopian influences. Fantastic Rift Valley wines can be found, in addition to spirits.
Value for cash

Doubles from #300 per night. Due to the distant situation and the issues of keeping the lodge, Bale Mountain is quite a bit more expensive that other comparable Ethiopian lodges. Costs, however, include a task every day, like a manual to take you to the plateau to search for wolves and other wildlife, a guided hike, or even watching nearby beekeepers shin trees to collect honey.
