Pousada Picinguaba Ubatuba
With jungle in its rear, a marine protection area starting in the quayside and the waterfall-dripping woods of the Serra do Mar country park extending as far as the eye could see, Picinguaba village is a very small island of humankind in a huge swathe of jungle. São Paulo and Rio international airports are about four hours’ drive away.
Style & personality
It is all about character here. The resort’s Cycladian whites and whites, loungey areas scattered with cushions and infinity pool invite lingering. Until you find the perspective — of islands along with aquamarine sea, beaches and woods — and want to clamber to a kayak, catch a surfboard or slip on sneakers and head-off seeking a waterfall.
Service & amenities
The staff are all locals and are full of real enthusiasm to discuss what is on their doorstep. The stand-up paddleboards, ship and trekking tours feel much more like shared experiences with a neighborhood friend than excursions. Service generally includes a heat much beyond specialized courtesies.
You will barely notice those blossom whites and whites, the honey-coloured tropical rocky woods and large thread-count cotton sheets. It is those fabulous views which catch the eye and have you slinging open the chimney and going to the balcony to swing in a hammock and watch hummingbirds flit from the trees and the sun change across the remote hills.
Food & beverage
Comfort cooking (ultra-fresh broiled or pan-fried fish, barbecued chicken) is enlivened by full-flavoured organically grown veggies and condiments in the resort’s farm from the hills. Breakfasts are enormous.
Value for cash
Double rooms from BR$255 (#63) year old, except Carnival and New Year when costs during at least twice. Breakfast included. Free Wi-Fi.
