Mata N’ativa Pousada Trancoso
Trancoso is where Brazil’s supermodels and actors come to dance, dine under the stars and revel in a little bit of down time. The town center is a bunch of cerise and ochre cottages assembled around a sugar-cube officer and sitting on a cliff over a swathe of gold, palm-shaded shores. Mata N’ativa is under 10 minutes’ walk away and nearer still to the shore.
Style & personality
Cabins are shy behind plant and joined by gravel trails that wind through the trees forcing one to walk through the garden or across the woods stream that runs throughout the property. Plants are carefully selected to attract wildlife; myriad butterflies and humming birds flit between the blossoms. Toucans, parakeets and kitten-sized marmoset monkeys see evenings and weekends to pluck palm fruits and berries in the trees.
Service & amenities
Service is impeccable. Nothing seems too much trouble for its warm-hearted owners Daniel and Daniela. The couple have spent decades researching the local countryside and coast and may organise all types of excursions, from whale-watching, reef-snorkelling, stand-up traveling and mountain biking to more sedate speedboat trips to private beaches to get a full-day picnic or horseback-riding across the sand. Massages can be found in the resort’s small spa.
The twelve cottages and annexes of chambers are carefully concealed beneath the trees and created for closeness. Softly-lit insides are painted in warm, muted colors and adorned with artwork by São Paulo still-life painter Maruzka Cára. Four-posters are draped in wispy mosquito nets and bed linen with a generous cotton-thread count. Wooden sofas are sprinkled with cushions. Baths in freshwater hardwoods, granites and marbles arrive with L’Occitane toiletries. Request an update to the Jequitibá or Sibipiruna master suites to get a whirlpool tub.
Food & beverage
The resort makes its own breads, juices and jams (from fruit grown in the backyard) and functions these with eggs of creamy and choice Brazilian coffee for breakfast.
